INVESTING IN TOMORROW'S LEADERS
EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

Frigoken recognises the challenges working women face, child care being a major one. The company established an onsite child care facility (crèche); a unique service in the region for children aged 6 months to 3 years. The facility strives to provide a safe, healthy, and caring environment that promotes the social, emotional, cognitive and physical development of children, while maintaining familiarity and consistency with their home life. Services provided at the crèche include the provision of nutritious and well balanced meals, constant holistic care, and structured learning with an emphasis on Early Childhood Development (ECD). The carers at the crèche are trained in ECD, and also provide parenting education sessions.

With a large workforce, and a limited capacity at the crèche, FKL partnered with the Aga Khan Foundation and Daraja to enhance local child care facilities to improve the quality of care for the children.

CASE STUDY

Over 200 children have graduated from the ECD program and more than 28 parent training sessions held

YOUNG FARMERS

Frigoken’s Young Farmers project works with local schools to promote agriculture among youth. Over the years, Frigoken has recognized the decrease in interest of youth in agriculture, despite the high, rising levels of unemployment. Frigoken’s agriculture experts train students and teachers on Good Agriculture Practices (GAP), through fun and interactive learning using a kitchen garden at the school sites, complementing existing environmental and learning activities at the schools. Produce grown supplements the schools’ feeding programmes or sold as an income generating activity.
