SUSTAINABILITY
RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION & PRODUCTION

Through the Environmental Management System (EMS), local regulations regarding the environment and resource usage are strictly adhered to and frequent audits are conducted to monitor usage and determine ways to continuously improve environmental performance.

In terms of energy, several initiatives are in place to reduce and optimize energy usage and implement renewable energy solutions, both at the factory and farms.

Water management focuses on the testing of effluents, ensuring that they are within the stipulated requirements, water recycling from the processing plant, and promoting water-efficient practices among staff and out-growers.

Through our comprehensive Waste Management System (WMS), FKL is committed to ensuring wastes are disposed of properly through the proper separation of waste and as much as possible, reusing and recycling wastes to reduce the amount of solid waste going to landfills.

The scope of our comprehensive EMS covers the entire plant: receiving & storage; processing; fresh pack, canning & freezing; packaging & dispatch of vegetables and administration.

Currently, over  90% of the company’s waste is diverted from landfills

CONSERVING THE ENVIRONMENT

Frigoken is committed to protecting and replenishing our earth’s natural resources, recognizing that biodiversity loss can result in critical reductions in the resources provided by the earth’s ecosystems, which contribute to economic prosperity and human development. Promoting sustainable farming techniques among our out growers is a key component to conserving our environment, focusing on preserving and replenishing soil nutrition, agroforestry and sustainable irrigation practices.

CLIMATE CHANGE

The impact of climate change has severely affected the small-scale farmers that we engage, who depend heavily on rain-fed agriculture. FKL is proactively investing in ways to improve practices in soil and water management, providing better access to water for irrigation as well as household use, and improving soil quality which will in turn help maintain improved yields. In collaboration with various partners, we identify and support irrigation interventions at both an individual and community level.  At an individual, family level we assist farmers by making pumps, drip irrigation equipment and water harvesting pans more accessible and affordable. At community level the projects focus on piped water, boreholes, furrow systems or canals and wells. FKL has recently embarked on measuring its GHG emissions in a phased manner.
